Release Notes – 6 Tools Completely Rewritten
Hi folks – We’ve been heads-down rewriting six core TechSuite tools from the ground up. These aren’t small patches; every one of these tools has been completely rebuilt with better diagnostics, better reporting, and a much-improved experience in your reports.
Test HDD for Issues — Complete Rewrite
This was a big one. “Test HDD for Issues” has been completely rewritten and now supports NVMe and SSD drives in addition to traditional SATA drives. Whether you’re working on a customer’s new NVMe laptop or an older spinning disk, this tool will now properly identify the drive type, run the right diagnostics, and give you a clear technician recommendation.
- Full NVMe and SSD drive detection and diagnostics
- Improved SMART attribute parsing with critical threshold warnings
- New self-test history tracking
- Completely redesigned report output Fix Filesystem Issues — Full Overhaul
“Fix Filesystem Issues” has been rebuilt from scratch with a proper four-phase approach: DISM, SFC, chkdsk, and CBS log analysis. The old version had a number of edge cases that could produce misleading results — those are all resolved now.
- Fixed SFC output encoding issues on Windows 10/11
- Fixed DISM repair incorrectly reporting success when it was skipped
- Added a proper read-only check mode that won’t accidentally schedule repairs
- Better handling of non-standard Windows drive configurations
Diagnose Printer Issues — Smarter Diagnostics
“Diagnose Printer Issues” has been rewritten with much smarter printer classification. It now properly distinguishes between physical and virtual printers, detects near-duplicate printer entries, and understands Windows-managed default printer settings.
- Virtual vs. physical printer classification
- Near-duplicate printer detection
- Proper handling of multi-function printer fax queues
- Windows-managed default printer awareness
List Installed Apps & Create Restore Point — Modernized
Both tools have been completely rewritten to match our current TechSuite standards. You’ll see cleaner, more detailed output in your reports, and both tools are significantly more reliable under edge cases.
- Redesigned report output with improved formatting
- Better error handling and reliability
- CreateRestorePoint now properly detects when System Restore is disabled vs. misconfigured
Clean Update Cache – Complete Rewrite
“Clean Windows Update Cache” has been completely rewritten. The old version would frequently hang for hours when files were locked. If you’ve ever had a procedure stuck on “net stop wuauserv”, that’s why. The new version uses file-by-file deletion with a timeout, so will never hang indefinitely. Beyond fixing the toolit now does a full Windows Update component reset:
- Stops all three WU services (wuauserv, BITS, and Cryptographic Services) before cleaning
- Clears the entire SoftwareDistribution folder and catroot2 cache, not just the download subfolder
- Re-registers Windows Update DLLs automatically after cleanup
- Reports last successful update date, reboot pending status, and space recovered
- Always restarts services, even if some files couldn’t be deleted
Malware Removal Procedure Update
- We’ve temporarily removed Zemana Antimalware from the default Malware Removal procedure while we update it or replace it. Your existing procedures will reflect this change automatically.
- We added the newly updated “Create Restore Point” tool to all Procedures at the very beginning.
Report Settings Tab
We’ve reorganized the Report Settings tab in TechPortal to make tool configuration easier to find and manage.
